![]() The Mercury Motor Inns were born and became an institution in the North. ![]() These were based on the realisation that most visitors to the Highlands and Islands came by car and there was little modern accommodation to offer them. In the late 70’s, with support from the Highlands and Islands Development Board Tourism Inns Scheme, one company opened hotels in Inverness, Fort William, Ullapool and Wick. There is also a good range of accommodation ranging from excellent campsites and modern backpackers hostels to excellent mid range hotels like the Cuillin Hills in Portree in Skye or the Alex Hotel in Fort William, which is a great favourite of mine. I am glad to say that since I first moved to the Highland and Islands, there has been a dramatic improvement in the standards of both the hotels and the customer care within the tourist industry. I think I will call it ‘Mike in the Highlands and Islands’. In fact, as this continues to sell, in small numbers I would add, I am going to do an audio version. Enjoy, and if you want to read more then ‘A Glasgow Boy Goes North’ is on Kindle. I have changed only a few things to reflect this. Most of it is still true and I am pleased to say that there has been a continued and considerable improvement in the scale and quality of tourist accommodation and restaurants. This piece below was written over 10 years ago when we had just moved from our Highland home to Edinburgh. This was said to me many years ago by Murdo Matheson of the Highland Fund and it certainly conveys much of the philosophy in the Highlands where a dram can warm the cockles on a cold winter’s day. ‘Your welcome was cordial and your cordial is welcome’.
